Rising damp
See the copper band extending from the brick and sloped down? It's extends into the building, a full sheet of it, and was designed to prevent rising damp. I've seen this all over France, Italy, and England but this was the first time in STL.

Door hinge. 1904
Brass hinge from 1904 on the Gothic entry doors of the New Hope Church on MFG and Tholozan. The exterior doors to our McPherson house vestibule had hinges three times this size.
