Getting even

I'm betting those glass cube windows were once long vertical glass panes.

I've always thought this was an odd building. I'm wondering if the upper red brick is original and the lower was pasted over part of the glass block for security (they don't match). The facade has a very stripped down deco-modern feel to it although it looks chopped off at the top... possible a floor removed?

I had not noticed the wall eating trees though... nice shots.

The top may have been blown off in the tornado of 1959. I've been thinking about that tornado recently and what it did to Gaslight Square. Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AVf2narm3I

I've been thinking about that tornado recently and what it did to Gaslight Square (the guy in the video lived above a store called Smokey Joe's which was just west of Crystal Palace).

I was almost five years old when it hit and I remember the driving tour in the family car taking in the damage. I also remember my dad taking my older sister and me for a walk along Vandeventer Place before it was razed. My dad just wanted to see it one more time.

My grandparents had a bicycle shop on Morgan Ford Rd in the 30's and 40's (it's currently owned by Tim Garrett: http://www.photoboothstl.com/ ) My dad walked daily to a school on Belle from MGF and must have walked through Vandeventer Place to get to school.

Jay Landsman owned the Crystal Palace. His nephew Jeremy started KDNA radio in the late 60's. KDNA was my first volunteer gig circa 1970.
